Today, my org, the #PlainViewProject, (re-)published 1000s of troubling facebook posts made by current and former police officers. These posts require a nationwide conversation about violence and prejudice in American policing.
Cops are heroes. They run into school to save kids from mass shooters. They guard churches, synagogues, and mosques to protect worshippers' right to pray. But we need to know that ALL cops have ALL of our backs, no matter our race or religion or ethnicity.
I don't believe that all or most police officers would make these posts. But the posts, taken together, show a clear subculture. They show that officers sometimes say (and maybe do) bigoted or violent things because other officers will applaud their behavior.
