5 Things Debut Authors Need 1. Website (u r the brand, not ur book) 2. Professional headshot 3. Be on at least 1 social platform (for updates at least. U don’t need to do anything else if U don’t want to) unless u write YA, then you need 2 b active 4. Promote your damn book
5. Build Your Network (start small/local until you’re in the circle)
I love working with debut authors. A lot of y’all always ? Why you haven’t hit the list, or why nothing has been done for your book. News flash, if you aren’t in the community then nobody cares
I wish I could say that you write the book, it gets published and then all the things happen. But Blerp let me stop you right there
Publishers do stuff for ALL books. May not have all the bells & whistles, and fancy red carpet & etc. but best believe ppl are working in house to get the word out about your book. But we analyze Everything. So the 6th thing that I would highly highly highly recommend is
Talking in front of ppl! You will he asked to talk about your book or your writing a thousand & one times so pls get used to it. And if you hate it, then this job isn’t for you. Because that what writing is, a job!
Your publisher, publicist, marketer, etc., are all expecting you to perform. To turn on the charm, woo the crowd, capture readers & etc
If you are dry AF when we put you in front of ppl, understand that it will impact the types of events we pitch you for.
If you can’t talk on camera, understand that impacts the type of media we pitch you for
If you can’t speak coherently about your book, understand that impacts the opportunities we will seek for you
