Great talk on the importance of good written communication (and documentation) in distributed teams by @lrnrd at #LeadDevBerlin. Couldn’t agree more that writing well is the key enabler of a more asynchronous and calm culture. h
What I find difficult is how to level up other people’s writing skills, especially with more extroverted team members who sometimes tend to just directly translate their verbal communication into writing 1-to-1 🗣➡️✍️ =❓
Filling the bandwidth gap between face-to-face and written communication takes conscious effort, editing, re-editing, and applying a different communication mindset.
Given that a large part of communication is actually non-verbal (body language, facial expression, tone), I now understand a little better why extroverts sometimes struggle here: Their communication bandwidth in writing is vastly reduced compared to speaking 💡
I believe that writing well is one of the most important skills not just at work, but in _life_. There isn’t any other form of communication to this day that scales nearly as well and endures nearly as long as writing.
